Thinning Hair – A Sensitive Subject for Women

Hair loss and thinning occurs when a person loses more hairs than normal. The average head has about 100,000 hairs. Each individual hair survives for an average of 4 1/2 years, during which it grows about half an inch per month. In the fifth year, the hair usually falls out, and within 6 months is replaced by a new one.

Hereditary hair loss, the most common type, affects nearly 50 million men in the United States. Hair loss and hair thinning occurs when a person loses more hairs than usual. The average head has about 100,000 hairs growing in the scalp, and 60 – 100 are shed every day. When hair is thinning, the amount shed begins to slowly increase.
